Books on the Alevaharin

Equine Colorations

The Alevaharin have a directional sort of division in their race, based upon the four cardinal directions. For each type of coloration - equine, feline, or draconic - the personality, colors, and general powers are slightly different for each direction, though similarities are there.

It should be noted that direction, and therefore powers and to some extent personality, are based upon coloration, not which clan they're from.

Basic Information:

Alevaharin have a total of 20 possible equine colorations, though only about 9 of those are very common. Those that have an equine coloration are considered more 'horse-like' than those that have feline or draconic, and their powers generally reflect that theme.

Strength in their overall power will be given a grade from 1-10, with 10 being strongest. This will affect how powerful they are in all of their direction-specific powers (such as: North is healer and can summon the North Wind in varying intensities, so an Alevahari with a power level of 8 would be a much more powerful healer and able to summon a much stronger wind than one with a power level of 2 would.)

Even though there are only four cardinal directions, there are another four directions (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest) that are made by combining the general traits of the two directions that they are between. All that can be classified as a secondary direction can summon the wind that their direction is (for example: One of the Southwest would be able to summon the Southwest Wind). Also, some powers will be combined slightly, though these powers will be weaker than what a cardinal direction would have (For example: using Southwest again, such a one might have visions that are projected into the air as 'illusions' that all can see.)

Directions and Descriptions:

North:
All the white/gray colorations. They are mainly healers and 'guides', a few healers will lean more towards physical, most towards mental/emotional healing, some will be both. The Alevaharin of the North know much of history and folk lore. They are generally slightly stronger in empathy than others, and can summon the North Wind in varying intensities.

South:
Yellows. They have powers of illusion, and always have faith in themselves and others, embrace/encourage change. These are occasionally seen as protectors, always trustworthy and often quite self-sufficient. Generally, they have very little difference strength-wise between empathy and telepathy (a 3-4 point difference instead of a 5-8 pt difference), and they can summon the South Wind in varying intensities

East:
Bays, chestnuts, etc. These Alevaharin have powers of divination (results always open to interpretation of course) and are generally physical healers (though some will be a combination of mental/emotional healers and physical healers, very few will be pure mental/emotional healers). Many willingly take the role of nurturer, a role that clicks well with their ability to heal. They are typically strongest in telepathy instead of empathy, and can summon the East Wind in varying intensities

West:
Blacks, ravens. These are traditionally the strong warriors or protectors, yet they can often leave on quests with little to no warning. Visions (open to interpretation of course) are common for them and they find their dreams incredibly meaningful. Their empathy is often stronger than telepathy with them, and they can summon the West Wind in varying intensities

Colors and their directions:

Silver Dapple - Northwest:
The commonest coloration seen that can be classified as Northwest. The Silver Dapples have a dark, almost black, brown coat of fur and a pure white mane and tail.

Grulla - Northwest:
Though a few Grullas have been seen, they are a rather rare coloration. Grullas are slate brown colored with primative markings (dorsal stripe and leg stripes). Those that are considered to be Northwest are typically a pale grayish color with black points (mane, tail, lower legs).

White - North:
The most common coloration for a North. Whites are just that, pure white with, usually, brown eyes of some shade, though other eye colors are known.

Cremello - North:
Somewhat more rare than the pure white, Cremellos also claim the title of a true North. They are typically a pale cream color with white mane and tail, and blue eyes, though a few other eye colors have been reported.

Perlino - Northeast:
A true Northeast, and the commonest one as well, Perlinos are rather close to Cremellos in coloration. Perlinos have a cream colored coat and reddished tinted points (mane, tail, and lower legs).

Sorrel - Northeast:
The second most common Northeast coloration, Sorrels have reddish colored coats with white manes and tails.

Silver Dapple Bay - Northeast:
Physically very similar in coloration to a Sorrel, the only difference is that their lower legs are a brown/black color and can be dappled.

Chestnut - East:
The only true East color, Chestnuts are varying shades of red. A few of them are a red-gold color, and are considered as Southeast instead of pure East.

Zebra Dun - South:
A common South color, Duns, otherwise known as Zebra Duns, feature a yellowish body coloration, with black points (mane, tail, lower legs) with primitive markings (dorsal stripe, horizontal zebra-like stripes on their legs). Although normally the black points would make them Southwest instead of South, it seems that they've decided that that "rule of thumb" doesn't apply to them. Once in a great while, a dark metallic gold Zebra Dun will be born.

Palomino - South:
Rarer than the Zebra Dun, Palominos feature a gold, yellow, or tan body with white mane and tail. Again, though the white mane and tail would typically make them an oddity - South-North - they seem to also ignore that general rule.

Buckskin - Southwest:
Buckskins, holding the distinction of being the only official Southwest coloration, look much like Zebra Duns. The only difference is that Buckskins do not have the primitive markings that a Dun has.

Black - West:
West is Black, and the Blacks are the commonest color for West, obviously. Their coat is pure black, with a bit of glossy shine.

Jet Black - West:
Jet Blacks are the second most common color for West, and have a a bluish tinge to their coats. Jet Blacks are born black, and stay that way, unlike a regular Black.

Raven - West:
Ravens are the rarest of the blacks, and back that up with a rather beautiful coloration. Instead of being black with a bit of glossy shine like a Black, or blue-black like a Jet Black, Ravens are black with an irridescent sheen, much like how the bird that's their namesake looks.

Oddities:

Occasionally, rarely, a Kitling will be born and grow into a coloration that's... rather contrary. The true oddities are the East-West and North-South colorations, though the Grays are rather contrary as well. Grays are not classified as Northeast or Northwest, even when their base colors were red or black respectively. They will be called East-North or West-North, based on the fact that their powers won't be a combination but instead an addition. So therefore, a Gray that was born a Chestnut, will have fairly strong East powers, yet as the Gray ages and the Chestnut color fades to a grayish color, North powers will emerge, yet they will be weaker (sometimes rather significantly) than the East powers. (So such an adult would be able to summon a strong East Wind, and a weaker North Wind)

Little is known about East-West or North-South colorations, as very few have ever been born. Though its suspected that they'll be similar to Grays in terms of what powers they'll have.

Bay - East-West:
Rarely ever have these been born, but enough have to know that they will be of a reddish body coloration with black points (mane, tail, lower legs). As Kitlings, and typically up until they're about a year and a half old, their lower legs will be a creamy color.

Grays - South/East/West-North:
Grays can be any color as Kitlings, and the only sign that they are Grays is a silvery edging on the nose and around the eyes. As they grow, they progressively lighten until they're a grayed out color of their original color. All Grays have a North affinity, but that is secondary, their strongest powers will be in whatever their original coloration was classified as.

Tobiano - South/East/West-North:
Tobianos look like someone took a can of white paint and poured it over top of them, plus their legs always have white stockings (markings that come up to about the knee). Their base color can be any of the listed colors, and they are always referred to by their base coloration + Tobiano (for example: Raven Tobiano, Chestnut Tobiano, etc). Tobianos that are Chestnut or Black will be Northeast and Northwest directions respectively.

Overo - South/East/West-North:
Overos are much like Tobianos, except that, on them, the white appears to start on their belly and creep upwards, and their legs do not have to have white stockings all the time and there is often a lot of white on their face. Their base color can be any listed, and they'll be referred too just like a Tobiano would would (base coloration + Overo: Chestnut Overo, Palomino Overo, etc). Overos that are Chestnut or Black will be Northeast and Northwest respectively.

Appaloosa - South/East/West-North:
Appaloosas come in many varying patterns, though the most common are: Blanket (colored except for a patch of white over the hips that sometimes extends onto the back and sides), Leopard (a white Alevahari with colored spots all over), and Snowflake (much like Leopard, except inverted, small white spots on a colored background). On occasion, an Appaloosa will show several of these patterns (Blanket with spots for example) Appaloosas can be any coloration. Chestnut or Black Appaloosas will be Northeast and Northwest respectively.

Roan - South/East/West-North:
A Roan is a solid base color (black for example) with white hairs scattered throughout the coat. Roans, unlike Grays, show that coloration from the start, and stay that way. The two most common colors of Roan are Blue Roan (Roan on Black) and Strawberry Roan (Roan on Chestnut), though other colors are possible. Blue Roans and Strawberry Roans will be classified as Northwest and Northeast respectively.
